Sandtray therapy materials are becoming more common place in child advocacy centers and other child counseling settings. However, many therapists do not have the training to feel comfortable using these materials with children and families in counseling sessions. Moreover, therapists who do have training in Sandtray therapy may be unsure how to integrate these techniques into trauma treatment while maintaining fidelity with evidence-based, directive modalities such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). This workshop will provide a foundational overview of Sandtray therapy with children and adolescents including preparation for sandtray sessions, protocols, developmental considerations, multicultural considerations, and potential benefits of utilizing sandtray in the treatment of trauma symptoms. Participants will also receive a brief overview of TF-CBT and explore ways to incorporate Sandtray into each of the "P.R.A.C.T.I.C.E." components of this treatment modality.
Learning Objectives:
Develop an understanding of the foundations of Sandtray therapy, including the history, materials, preparation, developmental considerations, multicultural considerations, the therapeutic process, and basic protocols
Understand the benefits of utilizing Sandtray therapy techniques in trauma treatment and how to incorporate techniques in ways that maintain fidelity to the TF-CBT model
Identify directive Sandtray prompts that can be utilized with clients in each "P.R.A.C.T.I.C.E." component of the TF-CBT modality.
