Human trafficking within the family unit presents challenges that differ substantially from stranger or acquaintance based trafficking. This includes different victim profiles, different red flags that may manifest to outsiders, and unique challenges in case presentation. This workshop will address lessons learned in prosecuting cases that are not "stereotypical" human trafficking and discuss how to proceed when the perpetrator lives down the hall from the victim.
Learning Objectives:
Differentiate between "typical" victim profiles and risk factors for victims of family based trafficking and victims of acquaintance trafficking
Develop strategies for communicating with juries when the offender is a parent or other relative from whom they would not expect exploitative behavior
Identify strategies for working with victims of complex trauma in order to reach just outcomes
