Director, Child Advocacy Studies Zero Abuse Project
Investigations and prosecutions of child death cases are complex, complicated, and medically challenging. Many MDTs do not include coroner investigators or medical examiners and this often results in missed information and missed opportunities for justice. This workshop will explore what every investigator and prosecutor needs to know about medico-legal death investigations from scene assessment, doll re-enactments, Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Investigation forms, autopsies, the difference between cause and manner of death, and effective use of coroner and/or medical examiner testimony in court. Presented by speakers with in-field experience and using best practices, visual aids, current research, and case studies. Attendees new to death investigations will learn essential tools to effectively build cases and veteran attendees will learn new skills and concepts to build on their existing base of knowledge. All attendees will increase their understanding of the valuable medico-legal partnership.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the importance of the medical legal partnership in child death investigations and prosecutions
Integrate death scene assessments, doll reenactments, SUIDI forms, and coroner testimony into case analysis
Demonstrate new knowledge of death investigations from the coroner perspective and how that knowledge can assist MDT members
