Experiences, beliefs, and emotions impact the decisions we make whether consciously or unconsciously. We say and often believe we are not biased when interacting with differing client populations but what maybe more realistic is that our underlying thoughts and beliefs are based on preconceived notions, lived experiences and heightened emotions. This workshop will assist social service professionals to acknowledge biases that exist, explore the way biases enable us to create judgements about a variety of clients (and other professionals), and the impact they may have on our ability to make sound ethical decisions when working with others.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will explore and interpret personal biases that affect decision making
Participants will learn about differences that exist when working with clients from differing identities and cultures than one’s self
Participants will be able to identify strategies to reduce bias and its impact on service delivery
