This presentation includes a case study which explores the application of behavior analysis to law enforcement investigation of sexual crimes against children including those using technology and the internet. The primary focus is to demonstrate that by better understanding perpetrator behavior investigators can substantially improve their investigative strategy and interview planning. Denial is among the most common issues which interviewers encounter when speaking to someone suspected or accused of sexually exploiting children. This presentation will explore how denial typically manifests in offender accounts, how to recognize the type of denial used and techniques for engaging and working through erroneous denial. The presentation will use video of interviews with sex offenders to illustrate the key points and to demonstrate effective interview techniques.
